would grass be ok for salamanders and newts because i was thinking that it would make quite a good hide if you did a small patch and it would probably be easy to care for

Can't see it being a problem - plant it from seed though in trays of soil (very cheap... you can get seed from b and q)just make sure there is no added fertilisers etc. You could possibly collect some but you run the risk of picking up parasites or chemical contamination which could kill your amphibian.
